Cocktails inspirés de ma vie quotidienne

Something Orange

IMG_2381

I have been thinking about which cocktail I was going prepare for Halloween for quite some time now. Foodie blogs offer tons of ideas, but I tend to get overwhelmed when faced with too many options, and none of the ones I saw online really inspired me.

I realized this morning that the answer was right there in my closet.  I have a blouse that is very simple in style, but very orange. I wear it every year for Halloween. It’s my own silly tradition, and it is far as I can go with the job that I do. I love to wear costumes. In my ideal world, I would be able to go to work dressed as Wonder Woman, as Marie-Antoinette or as Medusa. Unfortunately, this just would not work with the people I see everyday.

In any case, my orange top made me think that I should make myself an orange drink when I got back from work.

J’aime me costumer.

Aperol Classico adapted from Aperol

40 ml Aperol

San Pellegrino

3 Ice cubes

The Aperol website recommends a slice of orange as a garnish for the Aperol Classico, but I wanted something more scary or disgusting for my Halloween cocktail.

Line-up of the eyeball ingredients.

Green Pupil Eyeballs

2 canned lychees

2 green maraschino cherries

2 raisins

I am glad I only needed two eyeballs because the cherries and the lychees were pretty fragile, and I had to be very careful manipulating them.

Inserting the pupil into the iris, using a real surgery tool.

The lychees lost their round shape after I had stretched them to insert the cherries, so I put the eyeballs in the freezer for about ten minutes so that they could gain more firmness.

I ate seven lychees before being able to work on these two.

I meticulously placed my eyeballs and ice cubes at the bottom of my glass, using my surgical tweezers and I began pouring the Aperol.

I followed with the San Pellegrino, but then I discovered that…

…lychee eyeballs have a natural tendency to float.  This was not what I had intended, as I wanted them to be visible in my photograph.

Too many floaters in this drink.

I decided to insert the eyeballs in a cocktail pick instead. I actually liked the result better. I initially wanted a creepy Halloween dissection cocktail, but cute monster is good too.

    Mixologista,

I think that I shall try to duplicate your recipe, with a small change.

I shall cut the green cherries in half and leave a small space behind the “iris” of the lichee. During the freezing process I shall place them pupil-down in a container and fill up the back of the eyeball cavity with grenadine.

Then, when the eyeballs are placed on the swizzle stick over the glass, they will discharge subtle tendrils of blood into the drink, further celebrating the occasion…

    I do so love Hallowe’en!

    B
